The Tao is the preserve of the ten thousand beings.
It is the treasure of the good
And the refuge of the not-so-good.

Pleasing speech can be sold at market;
Handsome deeds can gain promotion –
Should someone be cast off for being not-so-good?

At the crowning of the Son of Heaven,
Or the appointment of the Three Ministers,
Do not send teams of horses bearing tribute of jade.
Rather remain at home and calmly send the Tao.

When the ancients explained why they esteemed the Tao
Did they not say that those who seek it find it
And finding it discover that their sins are put away?
It is the treasure of the world.
