Prior to creation there was something
That was vast, unchanging and alone
Ebbing and flowing unto infinity and yet
Worthy to be called the Mother of all Things
I do not know its name but refer to it as the Tao.
If pressed, I would call it Great,
Greatness implying an extension so profound
That, being unlimited, it reverts upon itself.

Thus:
The Tao is great;
The heavens are great;
The earth is great;
And the consciousness of man is great.

These are the four great things.
And one of them is man.

Let man then dwell in harmony with the earth,
As the earth dwells in harmony with heaven
And as heaven dwells in harmony with the Tao
Which dwells only in itself.
