The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao;
The name that can be named is not the eternal name.
The origin of heaven and earth has no name;
To the ten thousand beings it is the mother of all things.
To see the hidden essence let desire go;
Habitual desire perceives the outer shell.
Yet these two – the hidden and the manifest – are in truth alike,
They share a single origin and differ but in name.
For both proceed from one mystery
Deep and deeper, fathomless,
Transcendent gate to everything.
