Favor and disgrace are causes for dismay. 
Favor is a great affliction; it besets one’s sense of self.
That is why one says favor and disgrace are causes for dismay.

Favor leads men to debase themselves to obtain it,
And feeds the dread losing of it.
That is why favor is cause for dismay.

Therefore:
One has great trouble with the self.
If one were selfless, what trouble could one have?   

Therefore:
One who loves his self-respect before the world’s
Can be trusted to govern the world.
One who cherishes his inner sense of duty:
To him may the world be entrusted
